The complex is located in the former military area of Allegri Airport in Padua, inside a disused barracks not visible from the street. The migrants were previously housed in the Feriole gymnasium in Selvazzano, then left free for the start of the school year. The people are housed in containers of four people each. In addition, there is a separate module for the canteen and one for the bathroom.
Associations active in the area for the closure of the center find:
-
The absence of adequate clothing and blankets for the low winter temperatures
-
The absence of separate areas reserved for adults and unaccompanied minors, which creates a situation of promiscuity, exposing minors to the risk of exploitation, and delays in access to their fundamental rights (education, family reunification, etc.)
-
The absence of linguistic and cultural mediation, and the possibility of receiving adequate legal information about the procedures for requesting asylum in Italy, as well as the more general absence of information and orientation to existing services in the territory, which severely limits the interaction between the people housed here and the citizenship
-
The absence of proposed activities, which relegates people to doing nothing and segregating themselves in containers, also due to the low temperatures.
